The New York State Department of Health deemed wrestling to be a high-risk winter sport and did not allow competitors to begin practicing when the season would normally have started because of the coronavirus pandemic. Eventually, the go-ahead for high school wrestling was given, but it ended up being an extremely limited season that did not include sectionals or a state tournament.
Frank Popolizio, the club founder and director for Journeymen Wrestling and an assistant coach at Shenendehowa since 2004, vowed he would conduct a tournament if the NYSPHSAA event was not held. True to his word, the Journeymen NYS Championships will take place Friday and Saturday at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim, Pa.
