Laker Wrestlers Third at RIT Invite

Rochester, NY- The Oswego State Wrestling team finished third at this weekend's 35th Annual R.I.T. Invitational. John Carroll University edged Ithaca College for team honors with 150 points while the Bombers finished second with 147.5 points. The Lakers were third with 127 points followed by R.I.T. and Case Western Reserve who tied for fourth with 94.5 points. Cortland was sixth with 77 points with Wesleyan rounding out the field with 50.5 points.
Oswego State advanced five individuals into Saturday evening's finals but came away with only one champion. The Laker's Dan Dempsey wrestling at 125 pounds defeated Matt Simmons of John Carroll 6-0 to claim his first collegiate tournament victory. Dempsey seeded second defeated Chris Normile of Ithaca 6-0 in the first round and Jeff Ferrara of Cortland 6-4 in the semi-finals to advance to the championship match. Dempsey a sophomore leads the Lakers with a 14-3 overall record thus far this season.
Freshman Frank Petrucci wrestling at 149 pounds continues to excel for the Lakers as he pinned JP. Bollette of Ithaca in 3:54 and defeated Brian Fair of Wesleyan 7-2 before dropping an 8-5 decision to R.I.T.'s Ashley Grillo in the finals.
Jeff Holmes seeded third at 157 pounds also advanced to the finals. Holmes began the tournament by pinning Rob Roose of Wesleyan in 4:33. The Laker middleweight then defeated Eric Parker of Ithaca 6-0. In the semis, Holmes won a close 6-4 decision over second seeded Chris Nader of Case Western. In the championship bout Holmes lost to last years NCAA Division III runner up Ryan Ciotoli of Ithaca in sudden death overtime 3-1.
The fourth Oswego State wrestler to advance to the finals was Tom Mulchy at 197 pounds. In his first match of the day Mulchy pinned Andy Gleaseman of R.I.T. in 40 seconds, next the Laker defeated Thad Poweski of John Carroll 5-3 to advance to the finals. Top seeded Desi Molina of Case Western pinned Mulchy with one-second left in the second period to end the Laker's title hopes.
The final Laker to advance to the championship match was heavyweight Jason Turner. Turner seeing action for the first time this season opened the tournament with a 23-6 technical fall over Frank Bertino of Wesleyan. Turner ranked third in the NCAA Division III rankings then defeated Cortland's Alva Conklin 6-1 to set up the championship match with fourth ranked Eric Urdzik of John Carroll. In the finals the two All-American heavyweights battled to a 1-1 tie after the sudden death period. Urdzik earned the victory with an escape in the 30-second tiebreaker.
Captain Noah Seitel wrestled to a third place finish at 165 pounds after being upended by Ithaca's Bill Parry in the semi finals 6-3. Hannibal High School graduate Frank Pierce placed sixth at 285 pounds for the Lakers.
Oswego State returns to action on Wednesday December 6th as they host Ithaca College in Laker Hall's Max Ziel gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. The Bombers are currently ranked 16th in the latest NCAA Division III Adidas-Brute coaches poll.
