ROANOKE, VA. -- Charlie Grygas finished fourth in the 174-pound weight class of the 2023 DIII NCAA Tournament after a close defeat to #2 Zane Mulder, a victory over Stefan Major, and a loss in the 3rd place match to Seth Brossard. Grygas already secured his All-American status on day one of the tournament.
Semifinal vs #2 Mulder

Period 3
Mulder started on the bottom, and quickly escaped Grygas in the first ten seconds, bringing the score to 3-0 Mulder. Mulder mostly danced around and kept his distance from Grygas during the remaining time and the match ended without either man making any sort of significant move on one another. Due to Mulder's 2:27 ride time, he was awarded an additional point, defeating Grygas 4-0
Consolation Semifinal vs Major
Period 1
It looked like Major had a small issue with his headgear in the first fifteen seconds of the period, and the match was briefly paused to allow him to correct it.
Grygas scored an early takedown about a minute into the period, earning two points. However, Oswego coaches challenged the attempted escape by Major, citing a technical violation. After a short review, the call on the mat was upheld.
The match restarted with 1:56 remaining. Major started on the bottom, and was able to score a reversal with 1:45 left.
Grygas was able to escape Major quickly, giving him a 3-2 advantage.
Grygas quickly scored another takedown, and Major took some damage to his face, prompting Major's coaches to confront the officials and ask them to review the takedown.
After review, the officials ruled no takedown, and the clock was reset to :58.
The long review didn't really matter, as Grygas took down Major again within ten seconds. Major did escape the takedown quickly.
The period ended 5-3 Grygas
Period 2
Grygas elected to start at the bottom, and escaped in less than 20 seconds.
Grygas scored another takedown in the period, pushing the score to 8-3. Major was able to escape later in the period, and the third period started 8-4.
Period 3
Grygas was on top starting the third period, and he held a narrow edge in ride time. Major escaped, cutting Grygas' lead to 8-5. Grygas was called for his second stalling, bringing it even closer to 8-6.
It appeared that Grygas suffered an eye poke during one of the exchanges, but he did not ask for any type of stoppage.
The final minute went by with Major stepping up the pressure, but Grygas relied on some great defense to seal the win, to the delight of his coaches.
The victory guaranteed him at least a fourth place finish, and a matchup against Brossard, whom he had defeated the day before.
Consolation Final vs Brossard
Period 1
Grygas scored a takedown just over a minute into the first period. However, Brossard was able to escape after 13 seconds. Grygas ended the first period up 2-1.
Period 2
Grygas started the second period on the bottom, and escaped in 11 seconds, earning himself an additional point.
Brossard scored a double-leg takedown to even the score at 3 with just under a minute remaining.
Period 3
Brossard started on bottom, and was quickly able to escape to take the lead, 4-3.
Brossard scored another takedown and had the ride time advantage to take the match 7-3.
