EAST TAKES CITY WRESTLING TITLE BY
BEATING TECHNICAL
Swarthout, East High All-Around Athlete, Proves Hero of Mat Contest
Wednesday, April 23, 1924
East won the city scholastic wrestling championship yesterday
afternoon at the Central "Y," when they defeated the Technical High
team by a 28 to 16 score. Schwartz, who wrestles in the 105-pound
class for the Tech team, failed to appear and his absence was a
great handicap to Tech. Greg Swarthout, all-around athlete of the
East Siders, proved to be the life saver for the Orientals when he
stepped right into the 160-pound class and won a judge's decision
over Bausch, of Technical.
The most interesting match of the afternoon was, as expected, the
heavyweight tussle between Bartholomeo of Tech, and Krepeck, of
East. These two big men put on a fine exhibition of wrestling and
even Dick Daviscourt, one of the best heavyweight wrestlers in the
game, who was acting as one of the judges, was amazed at the showing
of the schoolboy grapplers. After fifteen minutes of hard and fast
wrestling, the judges finally pronounced the match a draw. Another
interesting match was the 147-pound go between Kress, of Tech, and
Meyers, of East. This match went fifteen minutes and was also called
a draw.
Lapi Keeps Slate Clean
Jimmy Lapi, of the East High team, who hasn't lost a match all
season, displayed fine form in the 135-pound class. He had little
difficulty defeating Howie, of Tech, outclassing the Tech man in all
departments and winning in the same convincing manner that has been
the feature of his wins all season. Lapi also won the individual
championship in the 135-pound class in the tournament two weeks ago.
Bradbury, of Tech, was given the surprise of his life in the
126-pound class. Bradbury thought he would have a cinch with Adams,
the East High man, as he has thrown him this season. Adams gave him
plenty of fight and at one time had the advantage on points. The
match went the limit of fifteen minutes, Bradbury being given the
decision by a slight margin. Geraci, of East, had little difficulty
in winning from Beisheim, in the 112 pound class. Sommers, of Tech,
was forced hard in the 118 pound class.

TECH GRAPPLERS CORE OVER EAST
Fights Mar Championship Bout at Monroe Junior
Wednesday, March 5, 1924
Fights and scuffles marred the Tech East High wrestling bouts at Monroe Junior High Last night, excitement running at a fever height for a time when large delegations of the student bodies of the two schools rushed out on the floor following a mishap in which Referee Ward Sidell was struck successively by Will Paine, who wrestled for the Orientals in the 158 pound class, and his father, following the awarding of the decision to Walter Bausch, who opposed him. Police intervention was necessary to quell the disturbance, after which the matches proceeded with Tech outscoring the East Siders to cop the city championship, 26 to 16.
Most of the trouble started when Bausch downed young Paine and touched his shoulders to the mat near the end of their bout. Paine immediately rose and struck Referee Sidell, while Paine's father rushed out from the sidelines and took a hand in the fracas. Students of the two schools immediately took sides and a free-for-all fight ensued for a few moments until the police intervened. Another disturbance occurred at the end of the matches when Coach Peter McKay of East High struck Referee Sidell when the latter was attempting to explain a decision to the former. Spectators intervened to end the trouble.
One of the best bouts of the program was the 158 pound match, in which Paine, of East and Bausch of Technical, were the contenders. The match was even most of the way, but after ten minutes of hard wrestling the East High man finally fell victim to body scissors, and Bausch pinned his shoulder to the mat. Elmer K. Smith, physical director of the Rochester public schools, will investigate the squabble.
Johnny Kress and Bill Meyers, captains of Technical and East High Schools respectively, put on a good match in the 147 pound class. Kress looked to have the better of the match at the start but Meyers came back strong in the final minutes and earned a judge's decision.

East High Downs Tech Wrestlers
Friday, February 1, 1924
East High wrestlers opened their season yesterday afternoon by defeating the Technical High mat team by the one sided score of 26 to 16 at East High School. The Technical High team was able to get only two falls and one decision out of eight matches. The big surprise of the meet was Krepeck, heavyweight wrestler for the Orientals, who received the judge's decision over Bartholomeo , who has not lost a match by such a method in two years. The two men were forced to wrestle an extra six minute period, the first period ending with the two contestants in a tie.
Paine, of the Orientals, in his grapple with Bough, of the Joseph avenue team, furnished the thrills of the afternoon's entertainment. Both of the entrants were new men on their teams, but displayed a good working knowledge of the sport. The two men started off with a flash, but soon calmed down to the finer tactic of the sport with Bough gaining the victory on points.
Shapiro drew the first honors for the charges of coach Robert McKay, getting a fall out of Schwartz in an extra period with a headlock. Geraci made short work of Newman with a body scissors to get the crown in the 112-118 pound class. Sommers downed Fetterly for the first score of his school, while Bradbury won over Adams in the 118-125 pound limit. In the 125-135 pound class Lapi, of East, pinned DeGarde's shoulders to the canvas with the head scissors. The two captains of the schools, Kress of Technical High, and Meyers of East, met on the mat in the 135-145 pound class, Meyers receiving the decision.
