Because it was necessary to get out of the gymnasium at Madison Junior
High School before 6 o'clock, the preliminaries in all classes in the
individual wrestling tourney were not completed as planned yesterday
afternoon. Fifteen bouts in all 112, 118, 126, 135 and one event in the
were staged, the preliminaries in the 105, 147-pound class being run off
inside the time limit. This leaves three classes still to compete, the
147-pound class, the 160-pound class and the heavyweight class, beside
the finals in all events.
Because many inexperienced wrestlers showed their wares yesterday
afternoon, very little real mat skill was exhibited and the veterans
came through as expected. Barons, last year's winner in the 105-pound
class, was put out of the running for honors in his class by Schwartz,
of Technical High, who won a judge's decision over the West High
grappler in the feature match in the 105-pound class. Mooney, of
Charlotte High, and Shapiro, of East High, were the other winners in
this class, all winning their bouts by decisions.
Geraci, of East, and Collamer, of East High, will wrestle in the finals
in the 112-pound class to-night. Geraci won over Busheim, of Technical
High, by a fall, and Collamer won over Lane, another East High grappler,
on a judge's decision.
Four bouts were staged in the 118-pound class, Schultz, East High;
Gentile, West High; Sommers, Technical High; and Halloway, of Charlotte
High being the winners. Gentile was forced to go in the 118-pound class
because he failed to make the 112-pound class by one-half a pound. Krank,
of West High, and Adams, of East High, were the winners in the 126-pound
class and will meet to-night in the finals.
In the 135-pound class, Stelljes, of West High, Lapi, of East High, and
Knight, of West High, came through with wins. In the only event in the
147-pound class, Haight, of Technical High, threw Lewis, of East High,
in 4 minutes and 40 seconds.
A new ruling that prevents a wrestler from competing in two classes will
stop Pete Bartolomeo, star heavyweight wrestler of Technical High, last
year's winner in this class, from also entering the 160-pound class.
Bartolomeo has decided to tackle the toughest opposition and has signed
up for the heavyweight class. The match between Krepack, of East High,
and Bartolomeo whould furnish the feature of to-night's card.
The finals will be held to-night at Madison Junior High starting at 7
o'clock. George Eaton, of California, who is the champion welterweight
wrestler of the Pacific coast, will referee to-night's bouts. |
