Webster Central's wrestlers, the only county grapplers to qualify in Class AA, faced the toughest opposition of their young lives yesterday when they faced the entire roster of Rochester champions at Ritter-Clark gym, and were unable to salvage a single win against the city's best.
About the only consolation for the Ridgemen was that Moses Gilbert, Madison High's 127-pound ace, was the only city wrestler able to register a pin. Nine matches were won by decision and two by forfeit.
The 12 winners travel to Brockport Saturday to face the Geneva District champs.
Class A semifinals in the Section 5 wrestling tournament are scheduled for Spencerport Central School tonight starting at 7:30 o'clock.
Winners of the Wayne-Monroe schools will oppose the winners of the Genesee-Orleans loop.
Seven Spencerport Central grapplers will compete: Bernard Wittman (95), David Spaziano (112), David Egan (120), Gilbert Spade (133), Henry Gardner (165), Eugene Dini (175), Caesar DiLorenzo (unlimited).
Others representing Wayne-Monroe are four from Wayne Central and one from Rush-Henrietta.
Tonight's winners will vie in the finals at Brockport State Teachers College Saturday at 1:45 p.m.
