GENEVA, Feb. 16 - Coach Elmer Leach's Geneva High wrestlers took six of 12 championships in the Finger Lakes Wrestling Tournament yesterday at Mynderse Academy.
In the feature match, Billy Crough of Seneca Falls, wrestling in the 165-pound division upset Tom De Fazio of Geneva in an overtime bout. The match ended 8-all, but the three-letter star from Mynderse proved too much for De Fazio. It marked the Genevan's first loss in area competition.
Geneva winners included Capt. Bob Pollino, Phil Choffin, Davey Morracco, Charlie Wilkinson, Nelson Principio and Arnie Nicklin. Coach Pete De Bottis' Mynderse winners were Johnny Bohensky and Crough.
Coach Dave Curran's Penn Yan men who won crowns were Larry Marchiando and Mike Jensen. Tommy Finnerty and Ronnie De Millo won laurels for Coach Bob Snyder's Waterloo Central grapplers.
Because Waterloo Central is the only B school in the Ontario-Seneca-Yates area with a wrestling squad, the entire team will wrestle in the quarter-final round Saturday against Wayne Central matmen, who represent Wayne County. The winners in the division will travel to Spencerport for the semifinals, and the finalists will meet at Canisteo March 8.
Actually, Geneva High will have eight matmen in the semifinal round, which is scheduled for the Corning Glass Works gym. Although defeated yesterday, Archie Pollard and Billy Brooks of the Panthers will make the journey to the glass center, since they lost to Waterloo Central grapplers. The finals are set for the Rochester Institute of Technology gym March 8.
