The 1962-63 wrestling
season began with a record turn-out of fifty-seven boys who fought for the
twelve starting positions on the varsity squad.
The team was led by Capt. Pete Serafine, a 145-lb., four-year veteran with a
record of 10-3-1, and Lenny Churnetski, a freshman. Lenny entered in the 95-lb.
class but only weighed 86-lbs. and ended up with a 12-2-1 record.
The R-H Comets started off the season this year with a 26-26 tie with Gates
Chili before a record crowd of 200 spectators. R-H then went on to show
superiority over the Varsity teams of Hilton (36-15), Penfield (27-18),
Brockport (31-11), and Industry (57-2).
Andrew Sykela, in his first year as wrestling coach, has given the team high
spirit, the taste of victory and the sportsmanship of defeat. Coach Sykela's
teams have recorded records of 4-10-1 for the Varsity and 8-2 for the JV team.
The R.H. J.V. team has beaten such teams as Brighton, Bishop Kearney, Industry,
Fairport, and Honeoye Falls. (The Cometeer, 1963) |
