ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.
We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and
articles as well. Many college and public libraries have microform copies
of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years. In them, you can find
lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time,
make a trip to the library and check it out. Ask a librarian how to get
started and how to print out the articles that you find.

Frank DeAngelis, who is
considered one of the finest wrestlers in the state, was unable to help his
Spencerport teammates last night in the Monroe County Wrestling League
championships at Rush-Henrietta.
Fortunately for the Rangers, they didn't need their star. Although DeAngelis
didn't wrestle, Spencerport won its sixth straight title.
The Rangers' who have had the crown since 1970 under the direction of coach Walt
Teike, had eight finalists and scored 121 points. Hilton finished second at 95.5
with Rush-Henrietta, champion of the league's Eastern Division, was third at
85.5.
A crowd of more than 2,000 filled Sperry High School's gymnasium to watch the
finals. Many of them came to watch the quick style of DeAngelis, only to see him
limp onto the mat while Irondequoit's Steve Olesiuk was declared the 138-pound
champion.
DeAngelis' problem is the stretching of soft tissues in his left knee, suffered
during a Friday night semifinal pin of Rush-Henrietta's Tom Holloway.
"I'm not sure exactly what happened," said DeAngelis, "but I knew it happened
because I felt a crunch. I went to the doctor this morning and he told me there
was no cartilage damage. Of course I wanted to win another county title, but not
at such an expense (of further injury)."
"He's doubtful next week," added Teike, referring to Saturday's East-West Day
competition at Fairport. "He wants to be ready to defend his title in the
sectionals and state meet if he can."
DeAngelis is the state champion at 138 pounds and had compiled a 106-1 record.
He and Teike both wore broad smiles when he limped out to shake hands with
Olesiuk. And on his return, Spencerport fans gave him a standing ovation, which
DeAngelis acknowleded with a smile and a wave.
Although he didn't wrestle in the final, DeAngelis won the Leo Bernabi Memorial
trophy for contibuting the most points to the team score.
In other matches, Eastridge's Dave DeNero and Spencerport Leon Becoats battled
at 167 pounds in the most tightly-contested bout. They were tied 1-1 after the
three regulation periods, and 3-3 after three, one-minute overtime periods.
The rules call for a decision by the other referees in such a circumstance, and
referees Jim Harris, Sam Williams and Roscoe Hastings awarded the decision to
DeNero.
"He was one of the top wrestlers I've faced," said DeNero. "It's been my biggest
goal all year to win the county title. Now I can shoot for the sectionals and
the states, hopefully."
DeNero was second in both the county meet and the Section 5 meet last year after
losing to Spencerport's Gary Baxter. He raised his individual record for the
year to 23-2.
Other strong performances came from R-H's Ken Rohlfing, Webster Thomas' John
Kinley and Denny Denner of Churchville-Chili.
Rohlfing, voted the tournament's outstanding wrestler, registered the only pin
of the finals by stopping East Rochester's Mark Morabito at 3:19.
Kinley, an All-Greater Rochester tackle last fall, beat Irondequoit's Mike
Pochalski, 7-4, in the 215-pound class, while Denner stopped Spencerport's Mike
Wilmart, 7-0, in the 250-pound event.
