ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.
We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and
articles as well. Many college and public libraries have microform copies
of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years. In them, you can find
lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time,
make a trip to the library and check it out. Ask a librarian how to get
started and how to print out the articles that you find.

1977-78 St. John
Fisher Cardinals

Coach: Mr. Roger
Woodworth
Spin! Keep spinning! Use your crawl space! Don't let up!
The scene is a tense wrestling match and these are just a few of the many cries
of direction that come from the wrestlers as they watch their teammate utilize
all of his knowledge of the sport in a mere eight-minute match.
This year the wrestling team at Fisher had everything going for it. There was
letterman Terry Mundrick, Joe Seil, Sandy Spero, Brom Bianchi, and Captain Skip
Farchione.
The team was further enhanced by the talents of Bob Spinelli, Joe Nesser, Mark
Nicolini, C.J. Hall, and Mark Szarejko.
It was a pretty impressive line-up in anyone's book. However, the previous
season brought a handful of disappointing losses. This was mainly because they
couldn't fill two weight classes. This season brought two freshmen into the
spotlight to fill these vacancies.
What do you get when you add Jim Mooney at 177 pounds and Jim Reinhardt at 190
pounds to the team? A powerhouse group that is ready to slaughter all
opposition.
The team performed quite well at the Colgate Invitational Tournament which was
highlighted by Sandy Spero who took fourth place at 134 pounds.
A particularly bright point of the season was when the grapplers finally
succeeded in defeating RIT after four unsuccessful attempts in past seasons.
In a tri-match the wrestlers suffered a loss to Potsdam State by a score of
26-12 yet came back to score a 36-6 victory over Clarkson College.
They showed their strength again when they defeated University of Rochester by a
walloping score of 38-11.
When the team traveled to South Bend, Indiana to participate in the National
Catholic Invitational (NCI) at Notre Dame University, they took a respectable
seventh place. An individual stand-out at the NCI was Sandy Spero, who took a
phenomenal first place.
The future also looks bright for the wrestlers. With the remarkable performances
by underclassmen, the team has developed the depth it needs to be a group to be
reckoned with for a long time to come. (By Ed Nelson, JoRoffs, 1978)
