Herman, Brown Win At Geneseo By Bill Bruton Jr., Sportswriter Batavia Daily News Monday, January 10, 1988
GENESEO - Tim Herman took sixth place in the 32-team Genesee Valley Wrestling Tournament a year ago as an eighth grader.
This year, the Byron-Bergen freshman was confident of taking a title in the 91-pound weight class.
"I pretty much thought I was going to win it," said Herman, who thought the weight class wasn't as strong this year.
Which is just what he did, beating Matt Ranger of Midlakes by a 2-1 decision in the final on Saturday.
Herman was seeded second in the weight class. Ranger was No. 1. The two had met last year in the same tournament, with Herman winning a 5-0 decision.
The final turned out to be close all the way, with Herman getting his two points in the first period.
"I just took him down, that's how I won," said the freshman. Ranger later got a stalling point.
Herman had an easy trip to the finals. After a bye, he beat Cory Edinger of Marion with a technical fall. He then decisioned Tim Steingass of Newark, 11-0. In the semifinals, he pinned Jon Larabee of Penn Yan.
The other area winner in the tournament was George Brown of Pavilion, who prevailed in the 145-pound weight class. Brown won by technical fall, 15-0, over Kendall's Chris Hart in the final.
In the semifinals, he won a 6-2 decision over Jason Hulett of Rush-Henrietta.
"His toughest match was against (Hulett)," said Pavilion coach John Grillo. "I figured if he beat him, he'd win the tournament."
In Brown's first match, he needed just :23 to pin Mike Bubel of York. He recorded another pin in his next match, stopping Dan Khorh of Avoca in 1:20. In his third match, Brown beat Mike Lynah of Livonia, 14-0.
Pavilion also got a second-place finish from John Bannister at 126, and a fourth-place showing from Brent Walton at 155.
Pavilion also had the best team finish of the area schools, coming in fifth with 141.5 points. Noth Rose-Wolcott won the tournament with 214.5 points. Rush-Henrietta was second at 183, Livonia was third at 174, and Midlakes fourth at 163.
Grillo was happy with his team's showing, but he knew it could have been better.
Pavilion had been in second place after Friday's action, but was overtaken by three other teams on Saturday.
Along with Herman and Brown, the Genesee Region League had another individual champion at 98 pounds, as Maurice Robinson of Kendall decisioned David Laird of Sodus, 6-4, in the final.
Don Duncanson of Lyndonville (105), Wade Marriott of Kendall (112), Brian Spicer of Alexander (138), and Roger Reis of Kendall (215) all finished second in their respective weight classes.
Four hundred wrestlers competed.
