ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.  We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and articles as well.  Many college and public libraries have microform copies of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years.  In them, you can find lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time, make a trip to the library and check it out.  Ask a librarian how to get started and how to print out the articles that you find.

Teike-Bernabi Tournament Recap

By Justin Basch, exclusively for ArmDrag.com

SPENCERPORT – 21 teams competed Monday and Tuesday for the elite championship of the Teiki-Bernabi champion. One of those teams, Wayne was in first place numerous times throughout the event. However, Spencerport showed what they're made of as they won 17 of their last 19 matches in the Tournament.

Spencerport’s Matt Legas and Alex Baxter scored pins in their final match-ups, along with teammate Mike Terenzi, who won in double overtime to help lead the Rangers to a team victory. Wayne was closely behind with 173.5 points. Shenedehowa finished third with 122 and a half points.

Here’s a match by match run down of the finals of the Tournament:

96 lbs – The final matchup for 96 pounds was between two varsity 7th graders. Austin Meys of Shenedehowa defeated Fredonia’s Kenny Betts 4–2.

103 lbs – Geneva’s Pete Achilles showed his dominance in the 103 pound weight class after defeating Josh Madison (LaSalle) 10–3 with numerous takedowns and backpoints.

112 lbs – An impressive Hunter Meys (Shenendehowa) defeated Lewiston Porter’s Justin Walp in a close matchup that resulted in a score of 9–7.

119 lbs – Johnson City’s Ryan McCormick defeated last year’s Teiki-Bernabi champion at 96 pounds, Paul Paddock (Warsaw), 7–2.

125 lbs –Aaron Segar’s (Centennial) trip all the way from Atlanta, Georgia did not end up as good as he had hoped as he was defeated by Wayne’s Josh Patterson 9–2. Patterson was voted the 2003 Most Outstanding Wrestler by the coaches after Patterson upsetting the 2002 Teiki Bernabi Champion, Brett Woodward (Spencerport), in the semi-finals, 11–10. Woodward defeated Patterson in the semi-finals last year.

130 lbs – Johnson City’s Steve Wiktorek defeated last a defending Teiki-Bernabi Champion (119 lbs.) Luke Baum (Wayne) in a close match-up. Wiktorek’s strength was too much for Baum as Wiktorek defeated him 5–2.

135 lbs – Rush Henrietta’s Larry LaRussa proved he could do better than a 3rd place finish, as he placed last year at this Tournament, as he defeated Josh Knecht who traveled all the way from Athena Area, Pennsylvania in a match-up that resulted in a score of 13–3.

140 lbs - Wayne’s Nate Patterson will once again have to settle for a 2nd place finish as he could not defeat Athen’s Trevor Bennet. The two undefeated wrestlers wrestled a full 6 minutes and Bennet outlasted Patterson in the end and won with a score of 4–3.

145 lbs – In what many call the match of the night, Spencerport’s Mike Terenzi defeated Sam Koningsberg (Centennial, Georgia). Terenzi escaped in double overtime to defeat the two-time Georgia State Champion 6–5.

152 lbs – After upsetting Mark Bloom (Geneva) in the semi-finals, Athen’s Jeremiah Serfas defeated Iroqouis’s Brandon Kopacz 10–2. A dominant performance was shown by Serfas throughout the Tournament.

160 lbs – In an impressive display of talent, Spencerport’s Matt Legas pinned Rush Henreitta’s Sam Rivera with 2 seconds to go in the second period to remain undefeated this season.

171 lbs – Joe Zaso (Wayne) defeated Lewiston Porter’s Frank Presutti in an intense matchup 8-2.

189 lbs – Southwestern’s Matt Mazgaj continued to show his excellence as he major decisioned Wayne’s Mike Johnson 13–3.

215 lbs – The 2003 Section 5 Representative at 189 pounds remains undefeated this season as he pinned his way through the 39th annual Teiki-Bernabi Tournament. Spencerport’s Alex Baxter pinned Fredonia’s Frank Zielinksi in 3 minutes, 14 seconds. Baxter also won the award for most pins, least time, as he had 4 victories via pin in 9 minutes, 13 seconds.

275 lbs – Gates-Chili’s Phil Byers became a two-time Teiki-Bernabi Tournament champion after he defeated Joey Wyld (Guilderland) 5–2. Byers was last years Section 5 representative at 275 pounds. A return to States is being talked about for the all county football player.
