E-mail corrections or additions to info@armdrag.com.

ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.  We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and articles as well.  Many college and public libraries have microform copies of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years.  In them, you can find lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time, make a trip to the library and check it out.  Ask a librarian how to get started and how to print out the articles that you find.

1922-23 West Occidentals

Coach: Mr. Emil Hulek

Coach Hulek
A new sport has sprung into prominence in West High this year, namely, wrestling. The surprisingly large crowds which attended the matches speak well of the growing popularity of this sport. Coach Hulek turned out a team worthy of praise, and in the coming years wrestling is bound to take its place with basketball and baseball. (The Annual, West High, 1923)

There is no wrestling team picture in West High's 1923 yearbook, The Annual, but senior John MacNab is listed as a team member.

The Athletic Season of 1922-23

The year 1922-23 has found a great athletic revival all over the country and in West High in particular. Not since the days of interscholastic football in Rochester, have West High students turned out in such great numbers to support and participate in athletics of all kinds. The spirit of the student body has been of the highest type at all times - rejoicing in victories and developing a "never say die" spirit with defeat. The various records of the past season point to success in the future and the class of June, 1923 can feel justly pround of having seen its Senior year, the beginning of this epoch in the history of West High School athletics. (The Annual, West High, 1923)

History of West High School

West High School came into existence in 1905, at a cost of three hundered and fifty thousand dollars. The campus contains seven acres and there are fifty-seven rooms in constant use in the school.

For the first five years, Mr. Weet served successfully as principal with a force of thirty-nine teachers. At his resignation, to become assistant superintendent of schools, Mr. Bennett, in 1910, succeeded him and still, in 1923, heads the executive staff of the school. Under him is a force of eighty-three teachers to instruct approximately two thousand pupils.

In 1908 the Athletic field was bought with a fund raised by the students.

In 1911 football was abolished.

in 1913 the present system of school from eighty-thirty to two-twenty was inaugurated.

In 1917 West High plunged fervently into war work with splendid results.

In 1918 plans were laid for an orchestra, band and Glee Club, all of which have proved successful.

In 1921 eleven hundred dollars was raised for the Chinese Relief Fund.

In 1922 the moving picture machine was installed.

In 1922 a Library Drive to obtain more books was successfully carried out.
