ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.  We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and articles as well.  Many college and public libraries have microform copies of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years.  In them, you can find lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time, make a trip to the library and check it out.  Ask a librarian how to get started and how to print out the articles that you find.

1923-24 West Occidentals

Coach: Mr. Emil Hulek

1923-24 West Occidentals Wrestling Team

NAMES UNKNOWN. (SOURCE: Senior Annual, West High, 1924.)

Wrestling, which is a new sport in the Rochester Schools, sprung into prominence this year in the development of a very clever team by Coach Hulek.

In the first meet we lost to East High by one bout when Shantz broke his collar bone. After much practice and some real hard workouts the team defeated Charlotte by eight bouts to none and the following week defeated Kodak six bouts to none.

There have been many candidates for the team this year as it is now considered a major sport and "W's" are awarded to members of the squad who take part in a meet. This sport should develop rapidly in West High. (Senior Annual, West High, 1924)

East High wrestlers took the second step towards the winning of the city championship yesterday afternoon when they defeated West High grapplers by the score 28 to 16. The meet was close throughout, with first the East Siders winning a match and then the Occidentals. The outcome of the meet depended on the final match, which was between Krepeck, of East High and Bishop, of West. Krepeck, however, who brought honors upon his shoulders in the first mat contest of the season by defeating Bartholomeo, of Technical High, repeated his act yesterday afternoon by throwing the Genesee Street lad in three minutes and thirty-five seconds.

East High was handicapped by the loss of two of its men from the team due to sickness. Paine was unable to wrestle because of the grippe, while Fetterly was out because of an injury sustained to the head, during the Geneva High meet. The big fight of the meet was furnished by Captain Bill Meyers of the Orientals, and Sandholzer, of West, and extra period being necessary to decide the winner. Meyers finally gained the fall from his man when he applied the half Nelson and the crotch hold.

The meet was witnessed by the largest crowd that has turned out to see a scholastic mat tournament between two schools. The boys gymnasium of East High School was filled to capacity and it was required to turn a number away because of lack of room. Bonifiglio and Meriano were the new men to substitute for the sick East High contenders. Dick Daviscourt acted as one of the judges of the meet.
